Biography
I am a Quebec painter whose practice explores memory, places, and emotional sensitivity through an intuitive and evocative pictorial approach. Since childhood, drawing and painting have held a central place in my life, quickly becoming privileged means of expression and personal exploration.
I pursued studies in visual arts at Cégep du Vieux Montréal, where I developed my technical knowledge while deepening my artistic reflection. This training helped structure an approach that is both rigorous and sensitive, marked by a constant search for balance between technical mastery and spontaneity of gesture.
My work is particularly interested in the emotional charge of places and the way spaces carry the traces of memories, experiences, and the passage of time. Through the materials, textures, and atmospheres I create, I seek to propose works that invite a contemplative and personal experience.
Montreal holds an important place in my artistic imagination. It is a city deeply connected to several meaningful memories from my twenties, a period that continues to influence my creative universe. Naturally nostalgic, I often revisit these fragments of memory through my works, as a way of recreating spaces of refuge and comfort.
My practice is also marked by a meticulous attention to detail and by a constant search for tension between control and spontaneity. This duality is reflected in my compositions, where atmospheres coexist — sometimes vibrant and intensely colorful, sometimes calmer, contemplative, or imbued with a certain inner tension.
Detail holds an essential place in the way I construct an image. I pay particular attention to textures, architectural elements, light, and the traces left by time in the places I depict. This approach reflects both a strong sensitivity to the visual environment and a desire to create works rich in emotion, depth, and narrative.
My artistic practice is rooted in a desire to create sensitive and authentic works, where emotion, atmosphere, and interpretation hold an essential place.
Artist’s Statement
My artistic practice is rooted in my deeply emotional relationship with places and memories. I mainly paint urban scenes inspired by Montreal, a city that remains intimately connected to several defining moments in my life. More than the figures, it is the spaces that affect me emotionally: a street lit at night, a façade worn by time, a light in a window, or the particular atmosphere of a neighbourhood can awaken in me a sensation, a memory, or a very specific inner state.
My works are nourished by this nostalgia. Through painting, I often revisit the emotions associated with my late twenties — a period marked by encounters, freedom, Montreal’s effervescence, and the feeling that everything still seemed possible. My paintings then become a way of preserving certain fragments of memory, like sensitive refuges where time seems suspended.
Each canvas begins with an intuitive process directly on the surface: I inscribe words, fragments of old newspapers, written traces, or elements inspired by graffiti. These first layers act as a hidden memory beneath the final image. They are then gradually covered by paint, without ever completely disappearing. I like the idea that certain emotions remain buried, yet continue to exist discreetly beneath the surface.
My process constantly oscillates between control and spontaneity. I place great importance on detail, texture, light, and the architectural elements that bring life to the scenes I construct. This meticulous attention coexists with a more instinctive approach to gesture and material. Some works become very vibrant and layered, while others leave more room for calm, silence, and contemplation.
Through my practice, I seek to create works in which the viewer can feel an emotional presence, even without knowing the exact story behind the image. I hope my paintings offer a space where each person can project their own memories, feel a familiar atmosphere, or rediscover, if only for a moment, a forgotten emotion.
