Biography

Gabrielle Dumont holds a diploma in Visual Arts from CEGEP de Sainte-Foy. Since graduating, she has been pursuing her artistic journey in her studio through self-directed learning.

In her work, she explores the human being, its intensity, and complexity.

It serves as an endless source of inspiration for her. The human figure appears in her paintings, sometimes in pairs, sometimes alone, but always wonderfully integrated into the space represented by each of her canvases. When she paints, the artist Gabrielle Dumont allows her intuition to guide her, avoiding anticipation of the final result of the artwork. She prefers to surrender herself and be surprised as her discoveries unfold. Her paintings emerge from spontaneous work, connected to the emotion of the moment.

Built upon emotions, spontaneity, colours, atmosphere, and symbolism, Gabrielle Dumont’s artistic work is like an intuitive language that comes directly from the heart.

Artist’s statement

My creative process is innate, arising through improvisation and without constraints. The open studio has therefore become the preferred space for my artistic exploration since the beginning.

After experimenting with various techniques, encaustic painting has become my preferred medium. The term “encaustic” comes from the Greek, meaning to burn, to engrave with fire, to burn internally with the fire of desire. In this process, color pigments are mixed with melted beeswax, and each applied layer must be fused with heat. My works are created on wooden panels to provide a solid and stable support for the material.

Choosing this technique has allowed me to feel in harmony with the expression of my creative identity. It grants me access to a language that accommodates all the ambivalences inherent in my creative exploration. This involves working with both blur and detail, control and the unexpected, figurative representation, and abstract ornamentation.

In my creations, the process involves multiple stages, including engraving to reveal dominant lines, layering colors and their transparencies. The addition of gold leaf is not merely decorative but a way to highlight the subject, creating attractive areas that reinforce the sometimes blurry or raw aspects of my textures. Thus, I infuse my works with a sumptuous brilliance, akin to an ancient and precious object imbued with my experiences, allowing me to reveal all the nuances of my intentions, expressing a state of contemplation that is a kind of quest for the absolute for me.

Byzantine art and icons have a certain influence on my work, evident in the subject matter, contemplative state, composition, and symbolism. My fascination with this art has connected me to the human being in all its splendor, as it is what captivates and inhabits my imagination. I am moved by their intensity, complexity, fragility, and strength—the invisible things that silently shape individuals and their subtle moods.

In my creations, I aspire to achieve a certain fulfillment that, I hope, will convey meaning to the viewer admiring the work. My intention is to generate a union between the essence of the work and the sacred, offering the opportunity to accompany people in their daily lives through my art.
