Original artwork

In The volunteer, Justina Smith celebrates the radiant beauty of sunflowers, their golden petals blooming freely in a vibrant garden. A magnificent sunflower dominates the composition, its rich brown center surrounded by brilliant yellow petals, accompanied by other flowers at different stages of bloom.

With spontaneous and expressive brushstrokes, the artist explores striking contrasts between vibrant yellows, deep greens, and touches of turquoise blue. Splashes of paint, rich textures, and dynamic lines bring movement and vitality to the scene. In the background, a softly colored fence structures the composition while highlighting the flowers’ natural energy.

Through this artwork, Justina Smith celebrates the spontaneity of nature. The title evokes the unexpected plants that grow freely without being intentionally planted, bringing beauty and surprise to a garden simply by being there. A joyful reminder to appreciate nature’s little surprises.
